Image Found in "Crucifixion Thorn"

Allthorn, sometimes called "crucifixion thorn" is a scrub bush native to Arizona. It lends itself well to jewelry creation since unusual and intricate images sometimes appear when the dead wood of the plant is cut and buffed. According to artisan Rolf Luetcke, "The Allthorn patterns were created by time, wind, weather and the growth patterns of the Allthorn plant".

Discovered in 1994 in the Cochise County desert by Rolf Luetcke, this hauntingly beautiful "Virgin Mary" tableau emerged from the "Crucifixion Thorn" when finished into a jewelry piece. It may be seen at his shop on Route 80, south of Benson, Arizona.

The question comes to mind, what is the significance, mystical or otherwise, of this image. Natural phenomenon, coincidence, or a hint that there is a Power at work behind our perceptions of "reality"?

Perhaps the universe is a dark and mysterious place, still, and full of wonder. If the scientific paradigm gives a less than satisfying explanation of Creation, it certainly, as far as giving meaning to human life, fails miserably.
