Unisys owns the patent on gif graphics created with the Lim-Zempel-Welsh algorith. Their legal counsel has issued a directive that unlicensed use of gif files may cost the offender $5,000 per Web site.

The most appropriate response to this situation is to convert all gif graphics on your site to another format. Among the nonproprietary file formats for graphics are jpeg (.jpg) and png. These offer better compression and have other advantages over gif files.
