There is certainly enough evidence to justify cynicism about the political process. Politicians have never been more blatant in kowtowing to special interest groups. Moreover, the Congress of the United States failed to acknowledge its share of the responsibility for the September 11 terrorist strike. Last summer, when many openly acknowledged that a terrorist attack was likely, even imminent, Congress pondered legislation expanding the role of the F.B.I., not for fighting terrorists, but for investigating copyright violations. It shows where the priorities of our elected officials lie. Prosecute kids bootlegging MP3 files and protect the profits of the media cartel. This is more important than protecting the citizenry. And, of course, as a reward themselves for their wisdom, the Congress regularly votes itself a pay raise. Not to mention the special privileges and the millionaire's health club. Recession or not. Unemployment or not. Nothing but the best for the political elite.
So, what to do? Simple. One term. Remember: ONE TERM. This November, go to the polls and vote. Vote against every incumbent on the ballot. Vote every incumbent out of office. Then, repeat the process every two years. We, the citizenry can enforce term limits, even if the politicians reject it.
If your elected representatives have done a good job, say to them, "Thank you for your public service. You deserve a nice and restful retirement." If not, just throw the bums out.
What's the downside on this? A few very able and conscientious politicians get voted out of office. We would lose John McCain and Patrick Leahy. On the other hand, we would be rid of a great deal of deadwood, such as Jesse Helms and Diane Feinstein, not to mention the two Howards (Coble of North Carolina and Berman of California, both pawns of Hollywood and the media cartel). And we will have sent a very important message. Elected representatives should not lose touch with their constituents. And, there's nothing special about politician. They're ordinary people, just like you and me.
It won't hurt. Pull that lever. Put a fresh team in Congress and in the state houses. Watch the political pundits choke on their platitudes and conventional wisdom. Listen to the thunder roll. Join the fun.
