Letters To Lawyers About iomega Rebate Problems
I have been on record with:
and
since about November of 1996 regarding my experience with the, "Hold Everything" promotion that Iomega Corporation ran in conjunction with, Creative Computer's MacMall and various other retail distribution outlets. According to the information that I had, since I had purchased a Zip 100 SCSI drive and a ten-pack of Zip disks, I was to receive a $50.00 rebate on the drive, a $20.00 rebate on the ten-pack of disks, a carrying case for the drive and two Zip disk caddies a a copy of Now Contact/Up-to-Date software. May this serve to compend and update my experience to-date.
I received my Zip 100 SCSI drive which I purchased from, Creative Computer's MacMall on September 4, 1996. I immediately installed the software and hardware to my system and registered my purchase via modem. On September 9, 1996 I mailed the materials specified on the receipt which accompanied the drive.
I waited at least eight weeks before my first call to Iomega to inquire on the progress of my rebate. When I called I was informed that I was, "... still in the system" and it was suggested that I call back in around six weeks if I had not received my rebate and products by then. It was shortly afterward that I e-mailed Steve Langford and Rob Surak, relating to them that I was beginning to feel the same pinch that so many others were on the Mailing Lists and Newsgroups that I subscribed to.
On December 13, 1996 I called, (888) 246-6342 and spoke with an Iomega representative who informed me that my rebate was, "no longer in the system" and that I needed to resend my purchase documentation. On January 28, 1997 I called to follow-up on my rebate status and was informed that I was, "... still in the system".
On February 28, 1997 I called, (800) 697-8833 and spoke with an Iomega represenatative who said that they ran out of, "those" [carrying cases] and just got more of, "them" in on January 31, 1997, and that I can expect, "it" around the middle of March. At the end of this conversation I thought to ask the representative to confirm that I was, "... in the system" for the same offer that I thought that I was. The representative informed me that I was, "... no longer in the system" for the offer that I thought that I was inquiring after. I was then informed that I might try calling, (888) 246-6342 and asking them. When I did, I was informed that I was indeed, "... still in the system" for the, "Hold Everything" package and that I should be receiving my rebate and products by the end of March.
Very shortly thereafter I received a copy of, Now Contact/Up-to-Date in the mail. I was not at all surprised to find that the CD which I received was the same as I have already received from Now Software save that it was embelished with the Iomega logo and out of date. In short, the disk contained only out-dated demo software.
I guess, if nothing else, I can be grateful that the drive has worked just fine throughout this scam; and that I have been able to put away enough money to replace it with the product of a reputable company when it blows-up.

Perhaps the comment I need to make most often, when I read letters from people complaining about Iomega, is that it does no good for us to complain to each other. Please write to those in positions of authority, about such matters.
