Responses To This Site

A [three-page response (9/10/96)] from James R. Hackney, Director, Office of Crashworthiness Standards, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, draws some comments from me.

This battle is far from over. I have received several phone calls since posting this site to the Web. One student is writing a paper about seatbelts on school buses. Others wonder what can be done.

There are two approaches to solving such political problems. You can take the grass-roots approach that I took and try to solve the problem from a bottom-up effort, by lobbying your P.T.O./P.T.A. and local school boards as well as your county- and state legislatures. Or, you can talk to the people at the top, such as the United States President and your House and Senate representatives in Congress.

Even better, you can follow the high example of Darleen DiGirolamo of Reisterstown, Maryland, who has both raised the issue in her P.T.A. and written a letter to President Clinton (with copies to Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore), sending him a copy of this report. Even Darleen's son Matthew sent a letter to President Clinton:

NHTSA responds to DiGirolamo's letter to Clinton

Ms. DiGirolamo fires back!

Note in passing:

4 February 1997

Call from Chad Summers

who is working with (R) Kansas State Senator Rich Becker

to put seatbelts on school buses.
