Steve Langford (alias Stephen A. Langford, Ph.D.; [s@TheRiver.com ] ) was born in New York City on 13 January 1940. By the time he was 6 and moved to Washington, D.C. (where repeated attempts to grow him up failed miserably), he had lived in NYC, Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, and Michigan -- having also visited the sea lions by the Cliff House, San Francisco, while seeing his father (U.S. Navy Lieutenant Malcolm Sparhawk Langford) off to fight World War II in the South Pacific. Steve graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, D.C., and entered Amherst College, from which he graduated in 1963 with a major in Geology. College was followed by a stint with the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Suitland, Maryland (greater Washington, D.C.), where Steve was a Bathymetrist, specializing in measuring ocean depths by using submarine sound waves. In late December, 1964, Steve went to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he earned a Master of Science in Geosciences (1969) and a Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics (1972). During his 14-year stay in Hawaii, Steve's interests shifted from a focus upon the ocean bottom to the development of methods for picturing refractive-index data gathered from studies of minerals and rocks. Those concerns remain the focus of Steve's work, currently performed in his Oro Valley home, near Tucson, Arizona.
Steve's mother, Marian Whaley Langford, moved in early March, 1997, from Napa to Whittier, California. "Sis" has taught English as a Second Language, remedial math, and various French courses. She holds a Master's Degree in French from the University of Montana, Billings, and has been awarded a medal by the French Government for her work with the French Community in the Washington, D.C. area.
Steve's older brother, "Mac" (Malcolm Sparhawk Langford, Jr.) is a retired high school teacher who lives with his Finnish wife, Marjatta "Tytti" Saukkonen Langford in the San Juan Islands of Washington State, U.S.A.
Steve's younger brother, Lane, lives in Whittier, California, where he and his wife "Susie" own and operate a book store.
