I have updated information from my cousin Betty Becka, grand-daughter of Clara Gardner, and will update this file as soon as I get it all loaded. There is much information and it will take a while to update it.

1. LOUIS1 GARDNER was born Abt. 1818 in New Jersey. He married LOUISA DICKERSON Abt. 1838 in New Jersey.

2. LOUIS J2 GARDNER (LOUIS1) was born September 30, 1839 in New Jersey, and died March 03, 1921 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie Co, TX. He married BERTHA MARTHA ALTHAUS March 07, 1870 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie, TX, daughter of JOHANN ALTHAUS and ANNA BEHRENS.
Notes for LOUIS J GARDNER:
Lived on San Antonio Street at age 70 with his wife who was 58 according to the April 19, 1910 census for Gillespie County. Louis's parents were also born in New Jersey. He died on March 3, 1921 and is buried in Der Friedhof Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to his wife Bertha Martha "Martha" Althaus. Louis came to Texas from New Jersey while serving in the Army. He served with the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War. During this time he was sent to Ft. Mason Scott to assist. It was during this period that he met my great grandmother Bertha Martha Althaus who was called Martha. He returned to New Jersey to be discharged from the Army, and returned to Fredericksburg to marry Martha. The artillery shells around his grave site were provided by my grandfather William Franklin Keyser.
Louis also had a brother named Phillip who was a minister. Phillip had visited him one time as it was reported in the paper. This information was provided by Flossie June Justi Reynolds,daughter of Susana Anna Icke and granddaughter of Ellen Gardner, Louis' daughter.
Today, 9 February 1999 I talked with the Gillespie County Clerks Office and found that Louis' middle initial on his death certificate is J not G as shown on his tombstone. I also found out that his parents names were Louis and Louisa Dickerson Gardner. I have requested his death certificate.
Notes for BERTHA MARTHA ALTHAUS:
The following is taken from page 9 of the Kirchen-Buch Church Record Book of the Vereins-Kirche 1849-1870:
To Christian Althaus was born by his wife Anna, nee Behrns, on 14 August a daughter who on 24 August was baptized and received the names; Bertha Martha. Baptismal witnesses were: Bertha Basse, Martha Marzil Doss, Annie Cegen Decker, Dietrich Rode.
Note: She was the 16th girl of 26 children confirmed so far that year. Also, note that the spelling of Behrns was incorrect.
According to my father William Scott Keyser, Sr., his grandmother Bertha Martha was shot and killed in 1937 by her neighbor. I am currently trying to locate newspaper articles in Fredericksburg to verify cause of death and who did it. "Martha" died April 11, 1937 and is buried in Der Friedhof Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to her husband Louis.
The Gillespie County Census of 1860 listed in Pioneers in God's Hill has her name listed as Mocy and sex as male. I suppose this was a childhood nickname and the census taker mistook it as a male name.
The 1910 census shows that Martha had 12 children of which 10 were still living at the time of the census.
Today, 9 February 1999, I talked with the Gillespie County Clerks office and confirmed that Bertha Martha's actual date of death was April 12, 1937 according to her death certificate. I have requested a copy since her tombstone shows it to be April 11.

Texas marriage records show that she married Morris Baldwin who is the same as William Franklin Keyser. The name Morris came from a change during the war to hide his German heritage since he was fighting against the Kaiser Wilhelm.

Ben and Anna Laura divorced in Fredericksburg, TX sometime between 1910-1920. His parents were both from Germany. According to the April 19, 1910 census, they were married for 5 years and lived on San Saba Street. Ben was a livery stable laborer. His whereabouts after the divorce is unknown at this time but is believed that he died in San Antonio.

I talked with the Gillespie County Clerks Office today 9 February 1999 and confirmed that Bernhard Roeder and Anna Laura Gardner were married in 1904. I have requested a copy of the Marriage Certificate.
Notes for WILLIAM FRANKLIN KEYSER:
William served during the Spanish-American War and World War I. During WWI he served with HQ CO 7 FA of the 1st Division as the Band Sgt. A photo of him in 1919 taken in Germany is in the scrapbook. He later served at Ft. Sam Houston and retired from the Army there and stayed in San Antonio. He is buried at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery next to his wife Anna Laura. I am still trying to verify his birth location. His obituary mentioned a brother Calvin and I have now located proof of a Calvin Keyser that had died in 1968 and was buried in West Chester, PA just outside of Philadelphia.

The following was taken from the "Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post" dated Wed Sept 20, 1989, p.5, section 1.
Albert Roeder, 82, passed away on Saturday, Sept 16, at 9:55 a.m. in the Hill Country Memorial Hospital.
Roeder was a native of Gillespie County and was born here on Aug 13, 1907, the son of Ben Roeder and Anna Laura Gardner Roeder. He was never married.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, a sister Helen Boog and a half brother, William S. Keyser, Sr., both of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Roeder.
Roeder was a former lineman for the Lower Colorado River Authority and for 27 years was employed by Miller's Courts.
Graveside services and interment were held on Tuesday, September 19, at 2 p.m., in the Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Perry Woerner officiating. Schaetter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Kurt Kuhlman and Roman Weber.

A note from Mr. Voy Althaus, Sr. says that he grew up around Albert since he spent most of his life staying and working for Voy's uncle, Irvin Althaus.
I also spoke with Christine Nehr Gaddis sister of Lena Nehr Roeder who was married to Helmuth Roeder. Christine said that she remembered Albert very well and that he used to visit Helmuth and Lena all the time. She said that Albert was Helmuth's cousin.

I am assuming that she moved there after her husbands (Freeman Eaton) death in 1978 to be with her family. I believe that she is buried in San Antonio but unsure at this time. Jr. as he was called by his family served briefly in the Army around 1962-1964. An avid bowler, he lost his battle with cancer of the pancreas September 19, 1988. He was born and raised in San Antonio, TX area but moved to Ohio during his last year of life so that his wife could be close to her parents for help. Jr. is buried at the Millville Cemetery in Hamilton, OH. His pallbearer were his brothers Robert and Raymond, friends Chris Whitley, Leon Zimmerman, James Rowlette and Doug Rowlette. I was aboard a ship in the Indian Ocean during his death and funeral and was unable to make it back.

I have been working on this family tree now since September 1997. I never knew how far I would go with it but every day I find something or someone new to add. It is a relief knowing where my ancestors came from and what they did for a living. It is hard to imagine how they had to live back in the "old" days but I know from research that it was not always easy. I can only tell you that from the photographs that I have seen so far, it seems that most of the family was happy. I still have a ways to go with my research but as of today April 17, 1998 I have over 900 names in the family tree.
Notes: I entered the U. S. Navy in September 1970 through the Navy Recruiting Office in downtown San Antonio. I will eventually list all my former commands here. I retired from the U.S. NAVY in New Orleans, LA after 22 years June 30, 1992.
Today, September 6, 1998 I attended the annual ALTHAUS/ROGERS reunion in Naco, Arizona at the Two Owls Inn. In attendance were approximately 75 family members who I finally got to meet after finding my family relations here in Arizona. I sat down with Harry Althaus who came in from New Mexico and discussed several aspects of the Althaus genealogy and in addition, got to meet the Rogers side of the family. Some of them are currently filling out genealogy worksheets for me to add their families to the tree. I will eventually get a list of those who attended from Edna Rogers Soles.
Today, October 21, 1998 I met Art and Marlene Althaus who are from South Dakota. they are on a trip to southern Mexico for the winter. Having corresponded with them a couple of months ago about the South Dakota ALTHAUS families, they had decided to come to Sierra Vista to visit with me. We had lunch and discussed our families and will continue to search for a common name between the two. Although they only stayed a couple of hours, it was enjoyable and they are a very nice couple.
