Generation No. 9

12. JOHANN CHRISTIAN ANTON9 ALTHAUS, DR. (GERTRUD8, JOHANNES7, JOHANN JOST6, JOHANNES5, NIKOLAUS4, PHILIPP3, JOHANNES2, WIEGAND1) was born February 11, 1821 in Erndtebrueck, Westphalia, Germany, and died August 10, 1915 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie Co, TX. He married ANNA ELISABETH BEHRENS October 05, 1847 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie CO, TX, daughter of JOHANN BEHRENS and ANNA KRING.

Notes for JOHANN CHRISTIAN ANTON ALTHAUS, DR.:

Born in Erndtebruck, Westphalia, Germany, February 11, 1821, Dr. Christian Althaus came on the ship " YORK" to Indianola in the autumn of 1846 and hence to Fredericksburg, Texas.

Just out of the Prussian Army Medical Corps, he was well trained in medicine and brought with him many medical journals and treatises which he studied diligently. Although he had not obtained a medical degree in Germany, Dr. Althaus was recognized as a doctor by the United States Government and received his license to practice medicine in Texas. His medical knowledge was greatly welcomed in Fredericksburg and surrounding areas where diphtheria, cholera, and other diseases were taking the lives of countless pioneers. The greatest handicap the pioneer doctor faced was the unavailability of drugs and anesthetics. Undaunted, he made his own medicines of herbs, seeds, roots, plants, and tree bark. These he gathered, dried, and then pounded into powder with mortar and pestle. Honey and juices of fruits and vegetables were used to make tonics, and animal tallow to prepare ointments. His treatment of diphtheria with a mixture of blackjack tree bark, honey, and almond juice was so effective that he was sent by the U. S. Government to Bandera and surrounding areas to stop the disease there.

A man of many talents, he is listed as a carpenter in the 1850 census. As carpenter and stone mason, he helped build the Vereins-Kirche and many early homes in Fredericksburg. He also worked at Fort Martin Scott; he probably helped build the fort. As a government agent, he distributed food to the Indians from this fort. Nearby he had a workshop, making saddles and riding gear; business was brisk when gold miners stopped on their way to California. He also freighted goods between Fort Martin Scott and Fort Concho.

During the Civil War he was instrumental in the organization and training of the home guard, as he was one of the few who had had military training. His father had been a Prussian Army military officer. In 1861 Dr. Althaus was appointed to fill a vacancy in the County Commissioners Court and was elected for a two-year term in 1862 and again in 1866. In 1864 he served on a committee to distribute food and clothing to county citizens who needed help during this critical Civil War period.

Dr. Althaus was married to Anna Marie Elizabeth Behrens October 5, 1847. She too was a native of Germany, born March 20, 1823. In the 1850's they moved to the rich farm land community of Cave Creek east of Fredericksburg. Here near the head springs of North Grape Creek amidst the rolling limestone hills and huge oak trees was the ideal place to settle and rear a family. Seven children were born to them: John, who died in infancy; William (m. Dorothea Wahrmund); Charley (m. Attie Key); Ernst (m. Pauline Jentsch); Louis (m. Dorothea Quintel); Martha (m. Louis Gardner); and Marie Magdalena (m. John Young).

The ingenuity of Dr. Althaus is shown again in the home that he built for his family. The outside was the typical two-story German home built of rock. The inside, however, was unique. The house was built directly over a spring, thereby providing running water in the house. He lined the walls of the spring with shelves, used for storing his prepared medicines as well as milk, butter, fresh meat, and his favorite beverage, buttermilk. From the attic a door opened onto the roof of the porch, where the plants and herbs were hung to dry in the summer months.

Another spring, around which he dug a large fish pond, served for irrigation. Dr. Althaus took great pride in his orchards. Whenever a fruit was in season, he would carry some of it around in his buggy and give it to everyone he met. Children for miles around knew and loved him for that reason. When they spotted his approaching buggy, they would leave their field work and scramble for the apples that he would toss to them.

Mrs. Althaus too was a magnanimous person, for Dr. Althaus used their home as a hospital for the ill, a refuge for the discouraged and jobless, and an orphanage for homeless children. She was a brave, hard-working, quick-witted woman. Although she was a strict disciplinarian, her grandson, Christian C. Althaus, said, "We always had a lot of fun with her. "

No man on the frontier was a greater friend of the Indians than Dr. Althaus. He spoke the languages of several Indian tribes. On his medical journeys throughout the sparsely settled country, he would spend the nights in the Indian villages, often rendering medical aid to them. They trusted and respected this quiet, liberal man. Dr. Althaus credited his good Indian friend, Chief John Carner, for having given him excellent advice on how to get along with the Indians: "Always be friendly and never pull a gun."

Dr. Althaus practiced medicine until he was seventy years of age. He continued, however, to care for his family until the age of ninety. He would spend hours building toy windmills with dancing puppets for his grandchildren, and he would tell stories as long as anyone would listen. Up until the time of his death, he was active, his hearing and eyesight good, his mind clear and alert, and he still carried himself as erect as the soldier he once had been.

Mrs. Althaus died November 10, 1910, at the age of 87 years. Dr. Althaus died August 10, 1915, at the age of 94 years, and was buried alongside his wife near St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cave Creek, of which he was a founder and supporter. There he was laid to rest but he was not forgotten, for here in the hills and vales of the adopted land he had learned to love, Dr. Christian Althaus served his fellowmen so faithfully, so compassionately, that is name and memory have lived on through generations as a great and beloved pioneer.

The above chapter was taken from the book Pioneers in GOD's Hills about Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, Texas. This particular chapter was written by Ella Mae Ottmers Herber and Esther Richter Weaver.

BERTHA MARTHA10 ALTHAUS (JOHANN CHRISTIAN ANTON9, GERTRUD8, JOHANNES7, JOHANN JOST6, JOHANNES5, NIKOLAUS4, PHILIPP3, JOHANNES2, WIEGAND1) was born August 14, 1851 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie CO, TX, and died April 11, 1937 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie CO, TX. She married LOUIS G GARDNER March 07, 1870 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie, TX.

Notes for BERTHA MARTHA ALTHAUS:

The following is taken from page 9 of the Kirchen-Buch Church Record Book of the Vereins-Kirche 1849-1870:

To Christian Althaus was born by his wife Anna, nee Behrns, on 14 August a daughter who on 24 August was baptized and received the names; Bertha Martha. Baptismal witnesses were: Bertha Basse, Martha Marzil Doss, Annie Cegen Decker, Dietrich Rode.

Note: She was the 16th girl of 26 children born so far that year. Also, note that the spelling of Behrns was incorrect.

According to my father William Scott Keyser, Sr., his grandmother Bertha Martha was shot and killed in 1937 by her neighbor. I am currently trying to locate newspaper articles in Fredericksburg to verify cause of death and who did it. "Martha" died April 11, 1937 and is buried in Der Friedhof Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to her husband Louis.

The Gillespie County Census of 1860 listed in Pioneers in God's Hill has her name listed as Mocy and sex as male. I suppose this was a childhood nickname and the census taker mistook it as a male name.

The 1910 census shows that Martha had 12 children of which 10 were still living at the time of the census.

Notes for LOUIS G GARDNER:

Lived on San Antonio Street at age 70 with his wife who was 58 according to the April 19, 1910 census for Gillespie County. Louis's parents were also born in New Jersey. He died on March 3, 1921 and is buried in Der Friedhof Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to his wife Bertha Martha "Martha" Althaus. Louis came to Texas from New Jersey while serving in the Army. He served with the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War. During this time he was sent to Ft. Mason Scott to assist. It was during this period that he met my great grandmother Bertha Martha Althaus who was called Martha. He returned to New Jersey to be discharged from the Army, and returned to Fredericksburg to marry Martha. The artillery shells around his grave site were provided by my grandfather William Franklin Keyser.

Louis also had a brother named Phillip who was a minister. Phillip had visited him one time as it was reported in the paper. This information was provided by Flossie June Justi Reynolds, daughter of Susana Anna Icke and granddaughter of Ellen Gardner, Louis' daughter.

Buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to his wife Attie M. Key Althaus. Referred to as Charley, his name is listed as Carl in the 1860 Gillespie County Census.

Information from Mr. Voy Althaus, Sr. shows that his name shows as Karl on baptismal records. It was later translated to Charles which he used legally but was called "Charlie". As a young adult Charlie was sent by his father from their Cave Creek home to the north east part of Gillespie County to start a cattle ranch on the Pittman track which Christian had bought at a tax sale. He started the ranch by roping wild cattle, yoking them to tamed oxen and letting the oxen bring the cattle home where they were claimed by branding. He didn't marry until he was about 30 when anglos began to move into the area of the ranch. They expanded the ranch to 5000 acres in Gillespie County and 1000 acres in Blanco which made him one of the largest ranchers in the County. Voy states that he remembers Charlie when he was in his teens and Charlie was in his 70's. He still rode all of the round ups, always out rode Voy and was still roping calves for marketing when he was 80. He was a great old man to have for a grandfather.

Notes for LOUIS ALTHAUS:

According to the information given to me by Mr. Voy Althaus, Sr., Louis went to Arizona after all his children were born. He found a job and moved his family there. He worked around various mining operations and homesteaded in several places. All of his descendants stayed in Arizona and New Mexico. He was a carpenter and homesteaded land several times. When he died he was sent back to Cave Creek for burial. He is there by himself now, his wife was buried in Arizona.

NOTE: I have two sources that list the first three children as being born in 1887. Information on two of them is not available. I was told that Frieda and two of her sibling were in a buggy accident when she was just an infant so based on her birthday and the marriage date of Louis and Dorothea that the other two were born before 1887.

Louis' wife Dorothea "Dora" Quindel Althaus is buried at the McNeal Cemetery in McNeal, Cochise County, AZ. She stayed there with her children after her husband died.

The following obituary was taken from the Bisbee Daily Review dated July 6, 1927.

LOUIS ALTHAUS DIES IN C. & A. HOSPITAL

Louis W. Althaus for many years a resident of this district, died yesterday morning at three o'clock at the C. & A. Hospital. The cause of the death is stated by attending physicians to be cancer of the stomach and liver. ** See Remarks Below

The deceased came to Bisbee from Fredericksburg, Texas in 1907 and has been in the service of the Calument & Arizona Mining Company for the 20 years since then in the capicity of watchman. He became ill and entered the hospital only six weeks ago. He was 62 years old.

Surviving are his widow, three sons, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters. The widow and one son, Edwin A. Althaus reside in Warren, another son, Harry J. Althaus, who is a member of the Ft. Bayard baseball club resides in Ft. Bayard, N.M. and the other son, Walter L. Althaus lives on his farm in the Sulphur Springs Valley. One daughter, Mrs. T.E. Rogers, resides in McNeal and the other, Mrs. J.J. Cuba, is residing in Inspiration. The brothers and sisters, William and Charles Althaus, and Mrs. Louis Gardner and Mrs. John Young all reside in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted this morning at the Palace Undertaking parlors at 11 0'clock, the Rev. C.C. Albrecht, Lutheran Minister, of Tucson officiating and the remains will be shipped to Fredericksburg, Texas this afternoon for interment.

** 4/26/1998 Today I visited with Dorothea "Dorothy" Rogers Littleton, Edna Rogers Soles and Jacob Rogers, all grandchildren of Louis Althaus and Dorothea Quindel Althaus. Apparently, there was some dispute that was never settled over the death of Louis Althaus. Although his death certificate states that he died from cancer of the stomach and liver, it seems that he probably died from an accident at the C & A Mines when he was crushed between two mining cars. They all state that lawyers were involved and that at one time Louis' wife was going to have his body exhumed for an additional autopsy. For some reason, this was never settled.
