Ferrins in the Civil War

The Farren, Ferren & Ferrin descendants
of Captain Jonathan Farren of Amesbury, MA, & Newton, NH,
who served in the American War of the Rebellion aka The Civil War

In the years I've published The Ferrin Family Newsletter, Kathi Desko, a Ferrin cousin of mine, and I have exchanged numerous messages about Ferrins, Farrens and Ferrens in the Civil War. On May 1st, Y2K, I received the following message from Kathi...

"Hi! Just wanted to let you know that while we were in Virginia we found William E Ferrin's grave. I confirmed that it was Uncle William today by telephone. Family legend had him buried in Arlington but I could never find him on any of the lists. Last year we'd gotten to City Point Cemetery in Hopewell, VA, & found a different Ferrin.

Poplar Grove National Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Photo by Gerald R. Desko. This year we drove a different section & stopped at Poplar Grove National Cemetery & found William! According to the lady I talked to today, he was originally buried at Fort Hell (there was also a Fort Damnation, by the way) in a grave with several others who died around him. Sometime from 1866 to 1869 he was reburied in an individual grave at Poplar Grove.
I am so thrilled to have found him! Next year I want to take flags to his grave & to Freeman Ferrin's grave at City Point. Also she said they hope to have some displays of info on some of the men buried there and asked if I'd send her info on William. So I'll be doing that too. I'd love to see him in a display where others could learn about him too. Kathi Desko

Soon after I received the above email, I received the following information she'd compiled, 99% of which, she said, is from information in Captain Jonathan Farren of Amesbury, Massachusetts, and Some of His Descendants by Frank M. Ferrin and Mary A. Brennan, pub. 1941.

Kousin Kathi's account of find the Civil War graves of our relatives includes tracing the remains from one burial to another. The first was ordinarily near the battlefield, while the second was most often in an official cemetery for those killed in "The War of the Rebellion", as it was called by the victors in the immediate aftermath of the war. If you're interested in reading more about Civil War cemeteries, you can find the history of them at The Civil War Era National Cemeteries webpage created by the Office of Facilities Management.

Unfortunately, the aforecited site doesn't have an index of those buried at the cemeteries. However, I'm certain sites with such indices must exist or are even now being created. If such a site DOES already exist, it is probably at RootsWeb:The Internet's Oldest and Largest FREE Genealogy Site
