The Ferrin Family Newsletter
![]()
- The Ferrin Family Newsletter I've published this newsletter, devoted to research on my earliest known ancestor, Jonathan Farren/Ferrin/Ferren of Amesbury, MA, and Newton, NH (c.1697 - 5 May 1770), since 1988.
- The Evolution of the "Soul Effigy" of Jonathan Farren used in FFN cover artwork FFN#6 - FFN#10 have all had cover artwork by yours truly. Here are a few notes on one of the elements in my personal artistic vocabulary pertaining to Jonathan Farren which has evolved over the years. (Includes voluminous and slow-loading visual documentation.)
- Links pertaining to Jonathan Farren Jonathan Farren was on the 2nd expedition of Lovewell's War and was a "leftenant" in the 1745 assault on Fort Louisburg, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. These topics, and several others, are covered by this link list.
- Jonathan Farren's Farm See an annotated 1952 aerial photograph and 3 USGS maps of the area where Jonathan Farren lived and read a brief history of Jonathan's farm.
- Ferrin, Ferren & Farren Veterans of the Civil War, 1860 to 1865 The descendants of Jonathan Farren who fought in the Civil War were all, so far as is known, Union soldiers. This page is being constructed with the help of Kathi Desko and includes photos by Shawn Corder and Gerald Desko.
- Quantrell's Raid: An Eyewitness Account by Edward Payson Farren Edward Payson Farren was a small boy when he and his family survived Quantrell's Raid, the brutal massacre of citizens of Lawrence, Kansas, during the Civil War. Here is his eyewitness account of that day.
- The Ferrin Resources Page at RootsWeb The starting point for all things Ferrin on the internet.
Alcana (Wagner) Ferrin & her daughter, Maude (Ferrin) Watkins of Wilmore, Kansas. This photo is by John Edward "Ed" Schrock, who lived next door to my great grandmother in Wilmore. His daughter, Janet (Schrock) Hubbard, wrote a wonderful story about her childhood memories of "Mrs. Ferrin & Maude" that is featured on the page devoted to my great grandmother.

The Alley Cat Song
Alice and Alcana came walking up the drive,
Just two hungry kitties, about 4 weeks alive,
And something in my head said:
"If you feed them, they will thrive",
Oh, Alley Cats, I'm so glad you could drop by.Alice and Alcana are runnin' 'round the house,
Climbing up the curtains and chasing a catnip mouse,
And runnin' 'cross my head while I am reading on the couch,
Oh, Alley Cats, I'm so glad you could drop by!

- A Brief Hiftory of Newton, NH
This is an abbreviated version of "A New Chronology of the Life & Times of Jonathan Farren of Amesbury, MA, & Newton, NH" which I compiled for The Ferrin Family Newsletter and plan to publish in the year 2000. Thanks to Scott Finley, "A Brief History of Newton, NH", was my very first online publication.

If, like me, you'd prefer to have an orchidectomy performed by a starving pack of wolves than to listen to the latest Rolling Stones release, or any rap music, or the over-played bland rock & roll that has been repackaged and is being broadcast as "smooth jazz", here are some links to music I especially enjoy these days. Musical Links
- Wylie and the Wild West Wylie Gustafson is an authentic cowboy, champion calf-roper, a genuinely decent human being, and the best American yodeler that has yet strutted a stage. I saw the band Oct. 30th, 1999, and got to shake the hand that wrote "Room to Roam", to name a personal favorite, and a host of other great songs. Be sure to check out the sound clips of Wylie's recordings, including several from his newest release, "Ridin' the Hi-Line".
- Chet Baker My first exposure to Chet's music was when I saw the movie Let's Get Lost not long after Chet died. His 1952 recordings with baritone saxplayer Gerry Mulligan are, I think, one of the high points of American music.
- Hoagy Carmichael Composer of Stardust , a songwriter who couldn't read or write standard musical notation, a lawyer who abandoned his profession the first time he heard his own recorded composition publically played, and one of the best American songwriters who ever lived. Amazon.com has Stardust and Much More and provides sound clips, including one of my favorites, "March of the Hoodlums", recorded in 1929.
- The Red Hot Jazz Archive (A history of Jazz before 1930) Scott Alexander's website is licensed by ASCAP and includes hundreds of complete copies of early jazz recordings, as well as encyclopedic information on the music and musicians. This is one of my favorite websites!
