About Tucson Art Theatre

Tucson Art Theatre began in 1989, under the direction of David Greenwood. In the last 15 years, Tucson Art Theatre has produced plays by Odets, Albee, Inge, Shepard, Williams, various local playwrights, little-known Russian playwrights, and, most especially, Horton Foote (whom some have called the Chekhov of Texas). In 1995, just after Foote won the Pulitzer Prize for The Young Man from Atlanta, he came to Tucson to see Tucson Art Theatre's production of Spring Dance and to speak at the Arizona Theatre Alliance Conference. A production of this Chekhov classic is a return to the roots of Tucson Art Theatre.

Notes from the Director

Twenty-one years ago, David Greenwood and I co-directed a scene from The Seagull for a class at the University of Arizona. We were young and had dreams of fame and glory. At the time, it seemed as though we had 200,000 years to do all the things we loved.

Two years ago, David wrote to me with the desire to reawaken Tucson Art Theatre after a long hiatus. When asked--"What would you like to do?"--my answer was, unquestionably, The Seagull. From this more mature vantage point, it appears that life is rather short and those things that we wish to do are best done now.

Why do I love this play so much? I love the complexity of these ten Russian characters. In spite of what some Americans believe, most of us are not wholly good or wholly evil. Most of us have great scars and great strengths. We live each day vacillating between our own heroism and villainy, struggling to understand our own inadequacies and triumphs. Chekhov understood this and gave us rich and unresolved characters in which to delight.

In this production, I have been fortunate to work with a lovely company of actors. I have been touched by the good will and generosity of everyone associated with the production and our many friends who have offered support and encouragement. When I wrote to Ken Ruta last spring, asking him to come and do the play with us, I warned him that he might be slumming it to work with our little company in the little Cabaret Theatre. Ken responded, "Oh, don't say that, Cindy. When you are working with a great play, you are never slumming it." The Seagull is indeed a great play, and I am happy to share it with you.

--Cynthia Meier, Managing Director of The Rogue Theatre

"What I've realized, Kostya, is that, with us, whether we're writers or actors, what really counts is not dreaming about fame and glory, not all the things I used to dream of; it's the ability to endure; knowing how to keep going despite everything."

--Nina, The Seagull, Act IV
