The ruins of Contention City lay to the right of this photo.
It appears that the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad briefly entered
this bend of the river before returning to the east bank
just south of this point where it proceeded up river toward Fairbank.

Sierra Vista, Arizona
To find Sierra Vista, take the road less traveled,
if the road forks, take it!
When you come, bring all your stuff.
Most find it a very hard place to leave...

Sierra Vista is the largest city in Cochise County Arizona. Cochise County was founded Feb. 1, 1881 and was formerly part of Pima County. It was named after the Apache Indian leader, Cochise. It has had a colorful history, with towns such as Tombstone, Bisbee and Willcox, and was once a haven for outlaws. Its area of : 6,215 Sq. Miles includes deserts, grasslands and evergreen forests. Cochise County lies in the very S.E. corner of Arizona and has a population of a little over 117,700. Sierra Vista with a population of about 40,430 is located in west central Cochise county at the base of the Huachuca mountains, on the west side of the San Pedro river valley about 15 miles north of the Arizona border with Mexico.  We are about 85 miles S.E. of  Tucson. At an elevation of 4,600 feet, on the western edge of the high desert, the weather is not as hot as Tucson and Phoenix. Of course one of the most significant industries in the area is Ft. Huachuca which is adjacent to Sierra Vista. Or is it the other way around? But the weather is hard to beat and there is lot's to enjoy both indoors and out.
