Tigrisoma sp. immature photographed 11 Nov. 2005 during a WINGS tour by Richard C. Hoyer.
It was about 20 meters from the road between Santa Elena and Cabeceras de Cañas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, approximately 2 km east of the town of Los Nubes. The exact coordinates are N10º 20.659' W084º49.885'. This was on or very close to the Continental Divide at about 1520 meters elevation. It was perched at the edge of cloud forest and a sloping grassy meadow. There are no creeks or rivers in the immediate area, i.e. no habitat for Fasciated Tiger-Heron, T. fasciatum. This is only about 10 kilometers or less in a straight line from Arenal Reservoir, which has some grassy shoreline not entirely unsuitable for Rufescent Tiger-Heron, T. lineatum. This elevation is well above the limits known for T. lineatum in Costa Rica, where it is rare even in the appropriate areas. Please send your comments to Rich Hoyer.
