Northern Pygmy-Owl, Glaucidium gnoma gnoma. The AOU hasn't yet split this nominate subspecies from the ones that occur north to southernmost Alaska, British Columbia, and Alberta. If they do, this will be called Mountain Pygmy-Owl. This and the Rocky Mountain subspecies meet in southeastern Arizona (Santa Catalina and Pinaleño Mountains), and it's still not clear whether they coexist or intergrade here. Complicating the issue is the Pacific Northwest subspecies, and what it does where it meets the Rocky Mountain birds. All can be distinguished by the rate of the call notes.
