This Bristle-thighed Curlew was photographed by Verena Brauer in Ecuador in August 1998. This is apparently a poor-quality scan, which was first forwaded to me by Jan Ole Kriegs over a year later. When it was clear that a final determination was not possible with this photo (discussion on ID Frontiers and opinion of other experts), Verena sent original prints to Robert Gill, who then obtained the opinion of 10 very experienced birders and ornithologists. All agreed it was unmistakably Bristle-thighed and not a Whimbrel. Details have not been published yet for this apparent first record for South America.
