Basic Wirework Tool Kit

This product is in answer to the frequent inquiries by new wire working bead jewelry artists for the correct tools. Buying cheap tools is self defeating when making fine jewelry. Often the jewelry pliers easily available do not have the finest of taper and finish necessary for quality wirework, and good flush cutters seem even harder to find. This prompted Kate to put together this basic kit as a companion to her wireworking book and video.

The stainless steel tools with jewel leaf springs, enabling them to be used for hours of comfortable wirework, are individually stamped with Kate's initials. The kit includes:

  • ROUND NOSE PLIERS: These pliers were chosen for working the three main guages of wire, 20, 22 and 24... recommended in Kate's wireworking book "Basic Wirework for Bead Jewelry Making".
  • FLAT NOSE PLIERS: These pliers come to a fine taper, allowing for a tight right angle, particularly important when making bar pins.
  • CURVED NOSE PLIERS: These pliers were carefully chosen for the angle of the curve and their fine taper. Kate has been amazed to discover how many bead stores do not sell, or even understand, the many uses of this important little tool. Essential for the finishing of fine wirework.
  • FLUSH CUTTERS: It is essential in good wireworking to use the correct cutter. The tip of the cutter should be able to penetrate between two small beads and still make a good flush cut. The cutters come with ergonomic handles to protect the hand from the slight jarring that comes with cutting half-hard wire.

Kate Drew-Wilkinson's Earwire JigŠ

This portable jig enables anyone to make their own french hooks for earrings. Jewelry makers usually buy machine-made french hooks which are expensive even when purchased in large quantities. When earwires are made with this jig, they cost no more than the price of the wire. This jig is small... it nestles in the palm of one hand, and hooks can be created from a coil of wire with no wastage. Every hook is exactly the same, and the cut end is simply finished by filing it on a small sharpening stone. Now available for left-handers.

Bead Hole Guage and ReamerŠ

This gadget was designed by Kate to solve the problems experienced when buying beads to use in wirework. One often finds stone beads with either slightly crooked holes or many that are incompletely drilled. This handy guage and reamer allows you to probe the bead holes before you buy. There are five rigid steel wires most commonly used in wirework: 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 gauge. Each steel wire has a slight serration which allows you to work away any little glitches that might remain inside a bead... a little kiln wash or some kind of trouble inside a pearl. Each one comes with a lampwork bead made by Kate to carry in your purse or car.

Earring Loop GaugeŠ

This little hardwood tool, designed by Kate, solves the problem of how to gauge the length of wire needed at the top of your headpin when making earrings, in order to turn loops of consistant size. This tool is very helpful when mass producing jewelry.
