Step 3:

Upload Your Files

You must first "Activate" your Personal Web Space before you can upload to your directory. (Your Web Space is not set up until you activate it.)

You will need to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload your website files. If you have not yet installed any FTP software, we recommend WS_FTP for Windows (click here to download WS_FTP), or Transmit for Macintosh (click here to download Transmit).

If you are not familiar with using FTP, try our Online FTP Tutorial.

If you are using something other than these two programs, here is the standard information that you may need for any FTP upload session:
  • Session Profile:
E.g., "Personal Website" (just make up a descriptive name you'll recognize later, to save these settings for your future reference)
  • Host Name or Server Name:
personal.riverusers.com (the name of our server)
  • Username or Account Name:
Your username (same as for your dialup or email)
  • Password:
Your password (same as for your dialup or email)
  • Remote Directory: (optional)
public_html (standard name for your web folder on our server )
  • Local Directory: (optional)
(Name of the folder on your computer where you have made and stored your Personal Web Page files)

NOTE: Your public_html directory is public; the world can see anything in it (but only you can change the files there). Without this public read-only access, nobody else on the Internet would be able to browse to and actually view your webpage(s).

Tips for successful uploading:

  1. When you do log onto our personal server you will see a directory (folder) called "public_html". All of your files must be placed into this folder in order for them to be seen on the Internet! (You can delete all the files inside of this folder if you want to start over, but do not delete this folder itself!)
  2. If you have the option, upload your html files in ASCII (text) format, and upload your images in Binary.
  3. Remember that when you upload a file, it overwrites any existing file on the server with the same name. This change is for keeps; there is no way to undo this later.
  4. After you upload your files, check how they look on the Internet. Pages can appear different, or you may forget to upload all of your files.
  5. Stick to using either ".html" (preferred) or ".htm" as your web pages' filename extension - try to avoid mixing extensions, so you won't have to guess later about which extension you used to name any given page.
  6. FTP "publishing wizards" of any type will ask you for some upload or session information. Give it the information you think it is asking for, based on the FTP information we have provided above. If it asks you for a remote directory, give it "public_html", and if it asks you for a local directory, enter the folder name on your computer where you have made and stored your Personal Web Page files, ready to be uploaded.
  7. Keep in mind that the idea is for you to transfer a copy of your web page files from your computer to ours. Once they are on our computer they will be accessible for all the world to see.
