2. HENRY2 WENDEL (OSWALD1) was born October 29, 1815 in Heimbach near Cassel, Germany, and died June 27, 1864 in Fredericksburg, Gilliespie CO, TX. He married ANNE E. KUEMMEL in Altemorschen, Germany.

The following information was given to me by Harry Althaus of New Mexico. It was written by a granddaughter of Henry Wendel. Her name I do not know at this time.
"Henry Wendel was born October 29, 1815 in Heimbach on the Fulda in Kuerhessen close to Kassel.
As a young man he left Heimbach and went to Altemorschen, where he worked for Dr. Witting, who owned a large farm.
Here he met and married Miss Anna Elizabeth Kuemmel and became manager of Dr. Witting Farms.
The following children were born to them there: Adam, Marie, Friederich (died in infancy), Fritz, Martha, and Oswald (died in infancy).
Then Dr. Witting sold his farms and Henry Wendel moved from Altemorschen to Borbeck Rhein Province where he and Adam found work in the Krupp Mines. Here another son was born to them and they names him John Oswald.
In the year 1859, the family decided to go to America. They boarded a ship at Bremen and after seven weeks at sea they arrived at Indianola, Texas without a mishap. From there they went to Meyersville, Texas, where they workded for Frederick and George Witting. Here another son was born to them, and they named him Lorenz.
In the winter of 1861, Henry Wendel met John Jacob Weber on the Colletto Creek. Mr. Weber was hauling freight to Fredericksburg, Texas and told him that Engelhart Weber, whom he had known in Heimbach, was living at Fredericksburg; and that Dr. Keidel's farm close to Engelhart Weber's place could be leased. So the family decided to come to Fredericksburg.
They packed their few belongings on the ox wagon and came to Fredericksburg where they rented Dr. Keidel's farm. Here a daughter was born to them and named Mathilda.
In the year of 1863, Adam, their oldest son, was conscripted as a Confederate soldier.
On june 25, 1864, Grandfather Henry Wendel became ill and died on June 27, 1864. Before he died, he called his four oldest children, Marie, Fritz, Martha and John to his bedside, and made them promise that they would care for their mother and little sister and brother. Then he prayed for his family and died. He was buried on the Pedernales River in the Engelhart Weber's family cemetery.
At the beginning of the year 1865, Adam came home on furlough and in April the war ended. Then Adam got a job at Emil Wahrmund's tending to this cattle. In the year 1866, Grandmother Wendel moved to Bear Creek where she lived until 1871. From then on she stayed with her children where they took care of her as they were able.
The last years of her life she stayed with her daughter and son-in-law, Elias Rode, where she died February 21, 1883 and was buried in the Dietrich Rode Family Cemetery at Cherry Springs, Texas.
Henry Wendel and his wife did not have any worldly goods. They were strangers in a foreign land, and we hope that they are citizens in their Heavenly Home, which was their aim in this world."

4. JOHN HERMAN2 WENDEL (OSWALD1) was born December 21, 1830 in Heimbach near Cassel, Germany, and died 1922. He married ANNE C. HOTTE.
Notes for JOHN HERMAN WENDEL:
John Herman was the first to leave Germany in 1848 at the age of 17. He came to Baltimore, served as a soldier, and spent most of his years around Washington, D.C.
A biography of John Herman Wendel states the following: "I left my good home in April 1848, 17 years old. During that Revolution I came to Baltimore the following June. At the end of the Mexican War, after two years, I drifted to Washington, and later on to Tennallytown, D.C., where I lived most of my time. I served in Co. G. Pennsylvania Volunteers. During the last years of the War, in the First Corps of Observation. My family, that is my wife and four children lived in or near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania."
His occupation was Market Garden and Poultry Business.

Notes for ADOLF QUINDEL:
Buried at Cave Creek Cemetery next to his wife Marie Wendel. It appears that Adolf may have married a second time based on the photo of his tombstone and data from the Cave Creek Cemetery. The photo which I put in the scrapbook shows that Adolf is buried with Bertha Quindel 1856 - 1948. I doubt that Bertha is Maria Wendel Quindel because of the birth year. My data shows that Maria is buried in the plot in front of Adolf. Another source list Adolf's birth year as 1842 however his tombstone shows 1848 and I will use that year.
Note: The Gillespie County Marriage Book of 1850-1865 list a Dorothea Quindel married to Conrad Harburg on August 28, 1853 and a Caroline Quindel to Phillip Klaerner on August 24, 1854. Just guessing but I think that they are probably Adolf's sisters and have noted it here for further research.

"Dora" moved to Arizona with her family after her husband found a job there. When he died and was sent back to Cave Creek outside of Fredericksburg, Tx she stayed in Arizona with her family and is buried at the McNeal Cemetery, McNeal, Cochise County, AZ next to her daughter Frieda Althaus Rogers.
Notes for LOUIS ALTHAUS:
According to the information given to me by Mr. Voy Althaus, Sr., Louis went to Arizona after all his children were born. He found a job and moved his family there. He worked around various mining operations and homesteaded in several places. All of his descendants stayed in Arizona and New Mexico. He was a carpenter and homesteaded land several times. When he died he was sent back to Cave Creek for burial. He is there by himself now, his wife was buried in McNeal, Arizona.
NOTE: I have two sources that list the first three children as being born in 1887. Information on two of them is not available. I was told that Frieda and two of her sibling were in a buggy accident when she was just an infant so based on her birthday and the marriage date of Louis and Dorothea that the other two were born before 1887.
Louis' wife Dorothea "Dora" Quindel Althaus is buried at the McNeal Cemetery in McNeal, Cochise County, AZ. She remained in Arizona with her children after her husband died.
The following obituary was taken from the Bisbee Daily Review dated July 6, 1927.
LOUIS ALTHAUS DIES IN C. & A. HOSPITAL
Louis W. Althaus for many years a resident of this district, died yesterday morning at three o'clock at the C. & A. Hospital. The cause of the death is stated by attending physicians to be cancer of the stomach and liver. ** See Remarks Below
The deceased came to Bisbee from Fredericksburg, Texas in 1907 and has been in the service of the Calument & Arizona Mining Company for the 20 years since then in the capicity of watchman. He became ill and entered the hospital only six weeks ago. He was 62 years old.
Surviving are his widow, three sons, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters. The widow and one son, Edwin A. Althaus reside in Warren, another son, Harry J. Althaus, who is a member of the Ft. Bayard baseball club resides in Ft. Bayard, N.M. and the other son, Walter L. Althaus lives on his farm in the Sulphur Springs Valley. One daughter, Mrs. T.E. Rogers, resides in McNeal and the other, Mrs. J.J. Cuba, is residing in Inspiration. The brothers and sisters, William and Charles Althaus, and Mrs. Louis Gardner and Mrs. John Young all reside in Fredericksburg, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted this morning at the Palace Undertaking parlors at 11 0'clock, the Rev. C.C. Albrecht, Lutheran Minister, of Tucson officiating and the remains will be shipped to Fredericksburg, Texas this afternoon for interment.
** 4/26/1998 Today I visited with Dorothea "Dorothy" Rogers Littleton, Edna Rogers Soles and Jacob Rogers, all grandchildren of Louis Althaus and Dorothea Quindel Althaus. Apparently, there was some dispute that was never settled over the death of Louis Althaus. Although his death certificate states that he died from cancer of the stomach and liver, it seems that he probably died from an accident at the C & A Mines when he was crushed between two mining cars. They all state that lawyers were involved and that at one time Louis' wife was going to have his body exhumed for an additional autopsy. For some reason, this was never settled.

Notes for THOMAS E. ROGERS:
Thomas Rogers moved from Canada to Kansas in 1902. It was there in Lyndon, Kansas he heard a city was to be built for a copper mining smelter and railroads and would be called Douglas, territory of Arizona. In 1905 he moved along with his brothers, sister, and mother to Douglas and started a hardware store. He was previously married to Frederica (Bolen, Bohlen) Boahlen. She died in the birth of there last child. Thomas and Frederica had five children, Ernest, Mary, Ethel, Ellen and Tommy. In 1919 he moved to Bisbee, Arizona just a few miles north of Douglas. He married Frieda Althaus, daughter of Louis and Dora Althaus, on May 19, 1919. A portion of the above was taken from comment in the Sierra Vista Herald on September 10, 1998 by Mary Frances Lynn about the Althaus/Rogers reunion held on 6 September 1998.
Thomas is buried at the McNeal Cemetery in McNeal, Cochise County, AZ next to his wife Frieda Althaus Rogers, mother-in-law Dorothea (Dora) E. Quindel Althaus, and his infant child T.E. who died in 1930. The grave sites of his son Jacob E. who is still living and Jacob's wife Ethel V. Rogers who died in 1977 are also located next to him.

Walter was a miner for Phelps Dodge in Bisbee for many years. He is buried at the McNeal Cemetery, McNeal, Cochise County, Arizona next to his wife Letha B. "Beatrice" Bigelow Althaus who died in 1989.
Walter and his wife attended the Grace Lutheran Church in Bisbee. The Rev. Reed Haakenson was minister during that time and officiated at both of their funerals. I spoke with Rev. Haakenson April 16, 1998 and he remembered Walter and his wife. He told me to speak to Dorothy Littleton, daughter of Frieda Althaus Rogers (Walter's sister), who was still in the area about the family because she would be the one who knew what I needed.

I first met Dorothy in April 1998 after contacting the minister who officiated at the funerals of Walter Althaus and Beatrice Bigelow Althaus. He told me she would be the one to talk to and gave me her number. I called her the same day and arranged a meeting at her house. She has been most co-operative in loaning me several photographs to scan and add to this family tree. I have been to her house twice now. During the first visit I had the pleasure of meeting her sister and brother, Edna Rogers Soles and Jacob Edwin (Jake) Rogers, Edna's husband Orin and Jake's wife Mary. During the second visit I had the pleasure of meeting with Dorothy's cousins Violet Althaus Laux and Elizabeth Louise (Betty) Althaus Wolslagel, both daughters of Edwin A. Althaus and Ida Marie Kuni Althaus. They have also lent me items to put into the family tree. I will continue to contact family members and some have also contacted me to add their families to the family tree. David is the son of Beatrice Bigelow Althaus but was born during her second marriage. I do not have her second husbands name at this time. Beatrice and Walter Althaus had been previously divorced and remarried a second time.
Today, September 6, 1998, I received some family history data on the WENDEL family which is Dorothea Quindel's mothers side. Someone had been providing yearly updates and these updates were given to me by Harry Althaus. In these updates I see an entry showing that David Althaus remarried Lee Van Volen November 23, 1968 so from this I will assume that they were previously married before David was married to Nelda Scott.
