This year's annual Mt. Graham Sacred Run begins at dawn on July 31, from Tucson's Pascua Yaqui Reservation Cultural Area, pausing in Arivaipa Canyon and continuing on to Mt. Grahams higher elevations on August 1. This year their will be a memorial service and ceremony for the Arivaipa Apaches who were massacred there in the late 1800's. This year the Yoemen Tekiai Foundation is hosting the run in collaboration with the San Carlos Apache originators. Mt. Graham has been granted eligible for listing as a Traditional Cultural Property. The highest number of participants from the most Native Nations yet are anticipated to come together to run the sacred staff across Tucson, over the desert, and up the mountain. Last years runners consisted of Apaches from San Carlos, Cibecue, White Mountain, Yaquis from Mexico and New Pascua, Lakota, Salt River, Gila River, Navajo and Chicanos, plus supporters from France, Algeria, Denmark, Italy, North Carolina, and New York. This year the list of participants has grown beyond last year's list again.
